WHAT's "EASTRE" ? - Eastre is an ancient word for the season of SPRING which comes at the end of the Winter quarter of the year. Modern Christians use the word for their celebration of their god's death and rebirth, the word eastre originally was not related to their religion and even today only Christians from English and German speaking countries call that feast "Easter", the rest of the Christian world uses some form of the word 'pascha" instead.
Originally the word Eastre came from words meaning "dawn" or "beginning" and this is easy to see in that it gave us other words like "east", the direction where the Sun comes up every day. Some scholars and ancient writers say that Eastre was the name of an ancient goddess of springtime and the dawn. There are several spellings of the old word: eastre; oestre; oster... In the early 1800's Jakob Grimm (one of the scholars who brought us the "Grimm's Fairytales" collection,) created the name Ostara as a suggestion of how it could have been spelled in the Old German.

SAT April _ _ ??, 12-3 PM,- - When we manage one of these family get-togethers it's a whole lot of fun! Last time, we had nearly a dozen people and three dogs show up and we had six or seven kites up at once.

Adjacent to a small public park in the South Hills, “The Tor”, as we call it, is a large hill from which much of southwestern Allegheny County can be seen. CHANTS and SONGS for the ADF Liturgy:
an Audio CD featuring Emerald & Maria
Sassafras now offers a 38 minute AUDIO CD of standard ADF songs and chants, including several Sassafras originals written by Emerald. Finally there's a way to learn and practice our songs other than at events! They're currently un-priced but donations are always appreciated. If you'd like a copy, email the grove to make sure we'll have one for you at the next event. Song sheets with lyrics are available upon request (check for many of those on this site's "Songs" page).
* Spiral Scouts
There was an attempt at a Pittsburgh chapter of Spiral Scouts in the works recently, for those parents among us. The Yahoo group for the protocircle was:
